Behind the Scenes – Set Construction

(photos by Olivia Smith)

February 5, 2018 - When you need scenery and sets built for a musical…who are you going to call? Your artists in residency, VOTEC students, maybe a graduate or two and of course some dear community members!

Ah, but it’s not just some paint here and a cobweb there that makes this set look ‘spooktacular’, oh contraire’. Ideas for the design started being creatively discussed in a VOTEC study hall overseen by director, Jacqui Paglialonga and VOTEC construction students back in September. Paglialonga drafted a scene-by-scene graphic depiction of the set for the production team to use as a model, you can check it out on the Addams Family website - https://sites.google.com/hoosicvalley.k12.ny.us/hoosic-valley-rep-website/home/production-information.

From there, art students of past and present entered the canvas. Actual scale designs were drawn, material lists compiled, volunteers enlisted, to-do lists created, deadlines adhered to and months after construction began, the set finally completed, on time and on budget.

Tons of fun was had by all while, as one budding artist so cheerfully put it, ‘we learned a few life lessons along the way like deadlines, budgets and teamwork’. Many thanks to community members: Scott and Jean Frisino, Tom Plasse, Michelle Gillespie, and Kim Murray for set construction and painting. A shout out to alumni Emily Gillespie ('15), Evan Murray ('12), Kyle Norton ('17), Greg Wolosen ('17), Tim Rossi ('16), and Alexis Parry ('17). Under the direction of Hoosic Valley Art Teacher Erin McCauliffe, the following students also contributed to the visual component of the show: Julie Bink, Olivia Hill, Alli Acton, Sabrina Case, Victoria Rossi, Renee Parry, Jessica Natter, and Courtney Bruso.

So, mark your calendars and come see one of the most remarkable set designs created for the Hoosic Valley stage, March 2, 3 and 4th when Hoosic Valley Repertory Theatre Company presents ‘The Addams Family’.
