Seatbelt "Fasten" Show

October 30, 2017 - Students in Hoosic Valley SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) participated in a Seatbelt “Fasten” Show on Friday to bring awareness to the importance of wearing a seatbelt in the car. Some facts about seatbelt safety are:

  • Vehicle crashes is the number one cause of death among people in the first 3 decades of life.
  • Seatbelts reduce the risk of serious injury in a crash by about 50%
  • Despite stricter safety laws over the last 30 years, about 1 in 7 people still do not buckle up.
  • In 1984, New York became the first state to enact a seat belt law. Despite this, 21% of highway deaths occurred because a person was not restrained- this is higher than alcohol or other distracted driving.
  • You CAN BE STOPPED by a police officer if you are not wearing your seatbelt. As a driver, YOU are responsible for making sure all passengers are restrained too!
  • A driver can receive fines of up to $100/person unrestrained and up to 3 points on a license for not following this law.

Thank you SADD for bringing this important information to our students and community.
