The Elementary School Celebrates Earth Day

April 20, 2018 - Earth Day is Sunday April 22nd.  This week, the elementary school did many environmentally themed activities throughout the building to commemorate Earth Day.  Students learned in their classes about composting, and then had a chance to practice the start of the composting process by identifying compostable food waste from their lunches and filling a bin that we transported to the compost bins next to our school garden.

Elementary students are also participating in a program called the Earth Day Groceries Project.  Our local Shop ‘n Save donated to us 500 paper grocery bags. Students decorated paper grocery bags with environmental messages for Earth Day.   The decorated bags are being returned to the grocery store so they can be distributed (full of groceries) to happy and amazed shoppers on Earth Day! Ask for paper, and keep an eye out for one of our bags the next time you’re shopping at our local Shop ‘n Save!

A few of our classes prepared our school garden for planting season, with the help of Mrs. Ross-Hixson.

Our Kindergarteners and first graders were prepared to brave the cold weather to plant spruce seedlings at a few points at the edges of our playgrounds, though the weather did not cooperate.  Monday will beautiful, so we will be extending our Earth Day festivities into next week, as they help us plant trees!
